3D printed figurine as an extra temptation

Different KFC restaurants in India are offering their customers a 3D printed mini figurines, if they buy a specific product, the KFC I-Box. The chosen restaurants have set up a full-body 3D scanning booths by Twindom.

The well-known toy that comes with a fast food chain’s happy meal is something popular all over the world. No matter if we are talking about McDonalds, Burger King or KFC, the plastic trinket’s temptation has long since lost its charm, as far as the parents are concerned. Or so we all thought until recently.

The new campaign of KFC in India offers their customers the chance to get their “3D printed selfie” in certain restaurants. When they buy an I-Box Menu the customers get a personalized mini figurine by combination of 3D scanning and 3D printing technology.

KFC launched the campaign in India last month, with the setting up of 3D scanning booths by Twindom. In them the clients can be digitized, and afterwards, 3D printed. Once the process is complete, the customers can pick up their chicken, soda, fries, and their tiny mini figurine.

“Toy collectibles are passé and so are selfies,” said Lluis Ruiz Ribot, CMO of KFC India. “The KFC I-Box takes things to a whole new level: the Smart Toy is unique, personalized, and a mini-you.”

The unusual marketing campaign has been realized by Little Me, a 3D printed figurine company based in Mumbai. The company set up a number of Full body 3D scanning booths to the participating KFC restaurants. Each of them is worth $23,000, can be set up in about 20 minutes, and take 5-10 minutes to generate 3D previews.

Interestingly, KFC is not the only company trying to take advantage of the publicity of the 3D printed selfies. Landmark Bank in Texas recently launched a campaign called “Become a Landmark” in an attempt to entice new customers to open an account. The reward is a 3D printed mini figurine, of course. Landmark Bank’s slogan for the campaign is “Don’t be a number, be a Landmark,” with the idea that the customer will get personalized, long-term attention. And his personalized 3D mini figurine.

“The idea of using 3D printing as a way to offer personalization to customers is interesting and one I think we will see more of as brands look to differentiate and create unique experiences to drive customers to physical stores.” said Will Drevno, co-founder of Twindom.
